Awash
This variety is a part of AJ's private collection, a prolific fig collector in Texas. His varieties are named after the city or landmark where it was found. AJ lived in the Austin area with his parents and young children. AJ's parents came to America from Macedonia and brought their love of figs. AJ traveled across the world to Africa, Asia, Europe, and Australia collecting over 200 varieties from his travels to places like Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Congo, Ghana, Ethiopia, Vietnam, India, China, Guam, Malaysia, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, and more. This fig was discovered in Awash, Ethiopia..
Due to unforeseen circumstances in late 2024, AJ and his family were no longer able to maintain and care for such an extensive collection of fig trees. The family brokered the sale of his extensive collection to a few people including Brandon at Lewis figs who acquired over half of the collection. Brandon is my source.
Before I distribute any of AJ's collection, I will assess them and attempt to see if they're an already named variety that is easy to identify. On top of that, I will ensure that the fig variety is either a Common Fig or a San Pedro (Breba) type. Those that require pollination will be gotten rid of.
